Elkamet Manufacturing Rotational molding process
Innovative manufacturing process for hollow plastic parts

Rotational process

Rotational molding, also known as rotational casting, is a highly specialized manufacturing process that is mainly used to produce hollow plastic products. This process offers a unique combination of design freedom, cost efficiency, and excellent material utilization.

Elkamet has many years of experience in this field. We are continuously developing this leading technology. Our R&D activities focus equally on the manufacturing process, the materials, and the product properties and characteristics.

Step by step to your desired product

1. Preparation

The raw material, usually in powder form, is poured into the mould.

2. Heating and rotating

The mould is placed in an oven and rotated around two axes. The material melts and spreads evenly over the inner walls.

3. Cooling down

Once the desired material thickness has been achieved, the mould is transferred to a cooling station. Here, the material hardens.

4. Demoulding

The finished product is removed and further processed if necessary.

Types of rotational processes at Elkamet

The powder process

Thermoplastic rotational moulding process

The production of molded parts using the thermoplastic rotational molding process (the “powder process”) is based on classic thermoplastic forming. The starting material is a powder or granulate, which is melted and formed during the process and then solidifies again.

Plastic materials are weighed out in the required quantities, filled into a mold, and sealed. The mold is heated and rotated around two perpendicular axes. During the rotational movement, the molten plastic adheres to the inner wall of the mold.

The mold is then cooled while continuing to rotate. Once the material has solidified and is dimensionally stable, the molded part can be removed from the mold.

Materials used in the thermoplastic rotational molding process:

  • Polyethylen (PE)
  • Vernetztes Polyethylen (XPE)
  • Polypropylen (PP)
  • Polyamid 11 (PA 11)
  • Polyamid 12 (PA 12)
The liquid process

Liquid PA6 rotational process

For the production of PA6 parts, Elkamet has long relied on a specially developed and continuously refined chemical process in which the material is first produced in the mold during shaping.

Elkamet uses this process for various types of PA6. As a material manufacturer, Elkamet can adjust the material's property profile for different requirements by selecting the formulation and process parameters.

The Elkamet process takes place below the PA6 melting temperature. Each individual Elkamet PA6 product thus consists of material freshly produced in the mold that has never been exposed to thermal stress beyond its own melting point. Compared to the thermoplastic processing of PA6, the Elkamet process also offers a longer mold life.

However, material quality and mold life are not the only advantages of the Elkamet process. Since the raw material is processed in liquid form, the Elkamet process also opens up expanded and new design possibilities that go far beyond those of the thermoplastic rotational process.

Advantages of the rotation process

Pressureless process, resulting in moderate tooling costs
Ideal for annual quantities ranging from a few hundred to many thousands
The wide range of Elkamet material systems covers a broad spectrum of applications.
Wall thicknesses can be adjusted without changing tools
Metal inserts and moulded functional features can be displayed
Complex shaping allows for good use of installation space and enables the implementation of your styling ideas.
